What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. When you return, the browser sends it back, which is how a site can remember that you have been before or that you dismissed a banner.

Some are set by us, and some by third-party services we use, such as our analytics provider or an embedded video. Similar technologies — local storage, pixels, device fingerprinting — do the same job by different means, and where we use any of them we treat them as cookies for the purposes of this policy.

Strictly necessary

These make the site work and cannot be switched off. They do not track you and they are not used for analytics or advertising.

Session cookie. Keeps your session coherent while you move between pages. Expires when you close your browser.

Consent record. Stores which cookie categories you have accepted, so we do not ask again on every page. Lasts six months, after which we ask again.

Security and load balancing. Set by our hosting provider to route requests and protect against automated abuse. Lasts for the session or up to one day.

Under EU law these require no consent, because the site cannot function without them.

Analytics

Optional, and only set if you accept them.

These tell us which pages are read, how long people stay, which project pages lead to enquiries, and what proportion of visitors are on a phone. We use this to decide what to publish and where the site needs work. We do not use it to build a profile of you or to identify individuals.

Usage analytics. Records page views, referring site, approximate location from IP address, and device type. IP addresses are truncated before storage. Typically lasts up to thirteen months.

Session recording. We do not use it.

Declining analytics changes nothing about what you can see or do here.

Embedded content

Some pages include material hosted elsewhere — a video, a map, occasionally a document viewer. These providers may set their own cookies once the content loads, and we have no control over what they set or how long it lasts.

Where possible we load embedded content only after you have consented, and we use privacy-preserving modes where the provider offers them. If you decline, the embed is replaced with a placeholder and a link, so nothing is loaded until you choose it.

Advertising

None. We do not run advertising cookies, conversion pixels, retargeting tags or social media trackers, and we do not participate in any advertising network. This is not a temporary position.

Managing your choices

On this site. Use the cookie settings in the footer to review or change your choices at any time. Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it, and takes effect immediately.

In your browser. Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, either entirely or by site, in its privacy or security settings. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site working.

Do Not Track. We honour browser-level Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals where they are sent, and treat them as a refusal of analytics cookies.

How long consent lasts

Six months. After that we will ask again, because consent given a long time ago is not meaningful consent. We will also ask again if we add a new category of cookie.

Changes to this policy

We update this page when the cookies we use change. The date at the top shows when it was last revised, and any new category will trigger a fresh consent request rather than a quiet edit.
