A former workshop becomes a place for making, gathering, and staying. Existing masonry is repaired with a light touch, while new courtyards bring air and daylight deep into the plan.
Site & context
The project occupies a deep industrial plot in Lisbon, where a street-facing workshop opens onto a quieter interior landscape. Existing masonry and traces of use give the site its strongest identity.
Concept
New courtyards are cut into the depth of the building to create a rhythm of rooms, gardens, and shared workspaces. The intervention is deliberately legible, allowing old and new to remain in conversation.
Materiality & construction
Existing brick and stone are repaired rather than concealed. New timber insertions, limewashed surfaces, and simple steel elements provide a light framework that can accommodate changing uses.
Sustainability
Reuse is the project’s primary environmental strategy. Retaining the structure, working with passive daylight and ventilation, and specifying repairable materials reduces both embodied impact and future waste.
Outcome
The workshop becomes a mixed, welcoming place with enough character for hospitality and enough flexibility for making. Its new courtyards bring climate, light, and everyday life deep into the former industrial shell.
