Brief
A workplace campus designed around a commons rather than a reception. Workrooms, terraces, and informal meeting spaces are stitched together by a generous internal street.
Site & context
The campus sits along an Amsterdam waterfront where former industrial plots are being adapted for new work. The project uses the long site to connect building, terrace, and public edge.
Concept
A generous internal street replaces the usual sequence of lobby, corridor, and closed office. Workrooms, informal meeting places, and terraces plug into this commons so movement becomes part of the culture of the workplace.
Materiality & construction
A clear timber and concrete structure gives the interiors a durable framework. Soft acoustic surfaces, glazed partitions, and planted edges introduce comfort while keeping the building visually connected.
Sustainability
The project prioritises a long-life, adaptable plan that can absorb changing work patterns. Daylight, mixed-mode ventilation, planted roofs, and selective reuse of the campus infrastructure reduce operational and embodied impact.
Outcome
Northbank Commons makes a workplace feel more like a small neighbourhood. It gives people choice between focus and exchange while keeping the social life of the building visible and easy to join.
